I hate the dark. Tueday night is one of those nights where "can't miss it" TV shows come on. I'm addicted to Gilmore Girls and Boston Legal. I also can't live without the internet. Its at least as important as water. I'm also not a big fan of fire. And I'm cold natured.
All of these are reasons why I was pretty annoyed when the power went off a little after 8 PM. I was innocently sitting at the computer reading message boards and watching Gilmore Girls when the lights flickered a few times. I thought they'd pull through for a second there, but out they went. and MAN it was dark. And Mikayla was naked and it was cold, so I wrapped her in a blanket to go outside and see what was up. Some ladies were saying that there was a bright flying light that went past our houses right before it went out. Proof that I watch too much TV - an alien invasion briefly crossed my mind. I also have been watching season 2 of Buffy. Thats the season where Angel goes bad again for a while, and those wacky vamps, they're big fans of cutting the power at the school. So, while no, I didn't suspect that a vampire was coming to get me - it did remind me of that.
Since I would go absolutely BONKERS just sitting there in the dark, we took a walk down to the mailbox. The key to passing the time was in there. A new Nick Jr Magazine. It was very very cold and windy out there.
We got back in and I read the articles that I thought they'd enjoy to the kids. There were a few games in there, including one having the kids take turns pretending to be different objects. I learned that Aaric is a lot more creative than Mikayla right now. She's big on the "i can't do that"'s. She can't be an umbrella because her arms can't make a big circle like that. Aaric managed to use his imagination more. And another was a paper version of a new game, "Chicken Limbo." Here, we had to match the faces with the foot prints. This is where I found that despite the fact that Mikayla often seems a lot more intellectually driven and is in some areas on the same level as Aaric is - she lacks some reasoning skills. Which is fine, I mean, she's 3. It was just funny because it was the first time that I ever thought she'd be able to do something, and she couldn't. Usually its the other way around. But she couldn't match them up. She assumed that the correct foot print would be beneath the face. Thats logical, right? Why would they mix them up anyway?
Then we looked through an evil insert that had been stuck in there. It was like a 10 page Walmart ad, complete with "gotta have it!" and "Love it!" stickers for kids to affix to their must-have Christmas gift pictures. Dear Lord. Must consumerism start at 3? This is NICK JUNIOR! Aimed at PRESCHOOLERS! Still, we had nothing better to do, so we looked through it. I worked in a conversation about how Christmas isn't about the getting. First I asked what Christmas is about. Aaric, well trained child that he is, replied that its Jesus' birthday. I've been drilling that into his brain for years, glad to see that *something* I've told him has stuck. He says its also about getting lots of new stuff though. We'll keep working on this. I wish I could ban Christmas presents. They bug me. I hate the "gimme" attitude that it breeds around this time of year.
So anyway, then we started on the little mini-mag that they stick in there especially FOR the kids (most of the other articles are about kids and activities for parents to do with the kids). We got through 2 pages when I saw yellow flashing lights go by. The power truck! We ran upstairs to watch him work from my bedroom window. I figured the kids would enjoy seeing him go up in that little box thingamajig to fix whatever it was that died or to get the alien down or whatever. They did. Suddenly, the lights came on. Hallelujah! I opened the window and they yelled out "Thank you!" to the nice power man who restored my TV and Internet.
Ahh... And I even got to catch most of Boston Legal. Good thing - I never would have fallen asleep with no power. I don't know why, but I just can't sleep with no power. It creeps me out.
But Buffy doesn't, so I'm off to watch more of Season 2. Though I just really don't like Angel as the bad guy, it makes me sad. and in season 2, it seems that high waisted pants were still cool, and it really bugs me to see it so often. And not really related to the high pants - but the constant use of heavy winter coats in Sunnydale really is perplexing. Why did they insist on this?
OKay, enough rambling. I just had to do SOMETHING to make up for my 2 hours of no power.
Does this win any award for most boring entry ever?
